This 16-day period is dedicated to the remembrance and honouring of deceased ancestors through Shraddha rituals. In Vastu, the ancestor energy and the South direction have a specific relationship that requires careful management during this fortnight.

The South Zone and Ancestor Energy in Vastu

The South direction in Vastu is associated with Yama, the lord of death and time, and with our ancestors. During Pitru Paksha, the veil between the living and the ancestral realms is believed to be thinner than usual. This means the South zone of your home carries heightened ancestral energy that can either bless your household if properly honoured, or create heaviness and obstacles if ignored.

What to Do During Pitru Paksha

Keep the South zone of your home extra clean throughout the 16 days. Place a photograph of deceased ancestors on an elevated surface in the South or South West zone. Light a sesame oil lamp in the South zone every evening during Pitru Paksha. Avoid buying new items or making major decisions during this period if possible - this is a time for gratitude not new beginnings.

Shraddha Puja and Vastu

When performing Shraddha or Tarpan at home, face South during the ritual - this is the direction of the ancestors. The ritual should be performed in the South, South West, or South East area of your home or courtyard. Never perform Shraddha in the North or North East zones - these are zones of new growth and divine clarity, not ancestor energy.

Keeping Home Energy Pure

Remove all clutter from South and South West zones before Pitru Paksha begins. Keep the home especially clean during these 16 days. Avoid bringing in broken, damaged, or dead items during this period. Light a lamp in the South zone each evening. Feed crows, ants, and cows during this period as they are believed to carry offerings to ancestors.
