Vastu for Interior Design: Colours, Shapes and Materials for Each Zone

Interior design is where aesthetics and energy meet. Most designers choose colours and materials based on style trends. Vastu-aligned interior design adds a layer of energetic precision — using the right colour, the right shape, and the right material in each zone to create a home that not only looks beautiful but actively supports the people living in it.
Each of the 16 Vastu zones has its own elemental nature — Fire, Water, Air, Earth, or Space — and responds to specific colours, shapes, and materials. Using the correct combination amplifies the zone. Using the wrong combination suppresses it silently.
ZONE-WISE COLOUR, SHAPE AND MATERIAL GUIDE
NORTH EAST (NE) — Water Element: Colours: white, light blue, aqua. Shapes: irregular, flowing, organic curves. Materials: glass, water features, light translucent fabrics. Avoid: heavy stone, dark brown wood, square sharp-edged furniture. EAST (E) — Air-to-Water Transition: Colours: green, brown. Shapes: rectangular, vertical. Materials: wood (light tones), plants, bamboo. Avoid: fire colours, red. SOUTH EAST (SE) — Fire Element: Colours: red, orange, pink, copper tones. Shapes: triangular, octagonal. Materials: copper, iron, red stone. Avoid: blue, grey, water features. SOUTH (S) — Fire Element: Colours: red, orange. Avoid: white, blue, water objects. SOUTH WEST (SW) — Earth Element: Colours: yellow, grey, cream, white. Shapes: square, solid. Materials: heavy stone, ceramic, earthenware. Avoid: red (fire suppresses earth here). WEST (W) — Space Element: Colours: white, yellow, silver, cream. Shapes: circular, round. Materials: metal (white metals), mirrors. Avoid: green, heavy plants. NORTH WEST (NW) — Air Element: Colours: white, grey, silver. Materials: light metals, white stone. Avoid: heavy earthy objects. NORTH (N) — Water Element: Colours: green, blue, white. Shapes: flowing, irregular. Materials: plants, water features (ideal zone for aquarium). Avoid: heavy storage, dark objects.
THE BRAHMASTHAN — SPACE ELEMENT
The exact centre of your home is the Brahmasthan — governed purely by the Space element. It should remain open, light, and free of all objects. No furniture, no pillar, no kitchen, no toilet. The material and colour treatment here should be minimal — light flooring, open ceiling if possible.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION ✅
✅ Before choosing paint colours, map your home's 16 zones with a compass and assign the correct elemental colour to each zone wall. ✅ Use zone-appropriate materials for flooring — earthenware tiles in SW, light wood or glass in NE, stone in SE. ✅ Place plants only in zones that welcome the Air element — East, North, NE, NNE. Avoid plants in SE, SSE, and South (fire zones). ✅ Metal objects (brass, copper, silver) should be placed in their elemental zones — copper in SE/South, silver in West/NW. ✅ Ensure the Brahmasthan has no furniture — place a light, decorative element at most.
